Changes and Updates to Our Web Site and Data Sets

| Web Site Features | Fatal Data | Nonfatal Data | Linked Homicide Data | Injury Codes |

Web Site Features

  • May 2002 - The EPICenter web site was launched!

Fatal Injury Data (from the California Death Statistical Master) - more about this data set

  • May 4, 2006 - 2004 fatal data added to the web site
  • May 6, 2003 - 2003 fatal data added to the web site
  • March 29, 2004 - 2002 fatal data added to the web site

Hospitalized Nonfatal Injury Data (from the OSHPD Patient Discharge Data) - more about this dataset

  • June 16, 2006 - We had an error in data from 2001-2004 where 8 cases of nonfatal hospitalized injuries that were of unknown age were included in our data sets.  To be consistent with previous years, we have removed these cases from this web site.  1 case was removed from 2004, 2 cases from 2003, 4 cases from 2002, and 1 case from 2001.  If these cases were previously included in your data run before June 2006, they would have shown up as being less than 1-year old rather than unknown.
  • May 4, 2006 - 2004 nonfatal data added to the web site
  • May 6, 2005 - 2003 nonfatal data added to the web site
  • April 15, 2004 - 2002 nonfatal data added to the web site
  • April 15, 2004 - We corrected an error in our 2001 data where we had inadvertently included non-residents in our data. This means an additional 3,893 records (1.6%) were included in the statewide totals that should not have been. The previous statewide total was 236,691, and the corrected statewide total is 232,798. Tables generated using County-level data should not have been affected - only statewide totals were incorrect.
  • October 24, 2003 - 2001 nonfatal data added to the web site

EPIC's Linked Homicide Data - more about this data set

  • The linked homicide data was last updated August 2, 2002.  Please contact jvancour@dhs.ca.gov for details on the updates.

Injury Codes (ICD-9 and ICD-10)

  • April 15, 2004 - New ICD-9 codes were incorporated into the 2002 Nonfatal data.  These codes were for late effects, terrorism, paintball gun injuries, and falls from non-motorized scooters.  For the new groupings of codes EPIC uses, please look at our table of ICD 9 and 10 codes.
